Jer's Fudge

Jer's Fudge

December 17, 2021

We’ve known Jer (Jeremy) since he was a baby, he’s the same age as our older daughter. Our families are close and it’s so fun watching them grow up together. He’s the first one up in the morning, coffee perking, always ready and excited to help his dad with anything.  He likes to send it, play hockey and hang out with his friends and his kitties. For entrepreneurship class this term, he nailed it when he and his Mom made fudge to sell to his classmates. On the bus ride home that day, he was super kind and shared some with our younger daughter and when she got home she shared some with me. It was SO GOOD that I needed to get the recipe so I could make some too and they said I could share it here as well so I hope you enjoy it as much as we are. Keep it up with these great ideas, Jer! We love you buddy!

GRANDMA VERNA'S BEST EVER BREAD RECIPE

The recipe to make bread is exactly the same as making cinnamon buns, the only difference is that you split the dough in half and drop them directly into loaf pans to proof before baking. Coming up soon is a stuffed ham and cheese loaf/buns that's been fantastic for lunch, dinner and field suppers. It's an all-in-one sandwich that never disappoints.

GRANDPA ART'S BORSCHT

Borscht can be made in so many different ways, there seems to be variations for all different cultures but it's a very basic soup that is so hearty and delicious.  This recipe comes from my father-in-law and he always makes it in the late summer and early fall with fresh veggies from his garden.

FARMING 101: FEED

We have three types of bales we handle for our herd: silage hay, hay and straw.  The ones I have pictured here are all round bales we make with our round baler but we also have smaller squares we make up of hay and straw for hand feeding and bedding in the barn.

HOMEMADE MINCEMEAT TARTS

This is one of those recipes you either really love or really hate.  As a kid, I didn't like it but I wasn't a big raisin fan so that's why but now I love it!  It's so spicy and festive!

AUNTY CATHY'S DILL PICKLES

For some reason canning, pickling and making jam or pie filling seem to be really intimidating to a lot of people but if you have the right tools it's really not that difficult to do.  And who doesn't love dill pickles?  Just like cookies, I find that homemade are never the same as store-bought either - they're always better.

ARIZONA LEMON PIE

My parents are snowbirds and they live in Arizona for the winter.  We love to go down and visit them every year, the retirement lifestyle is one for me.  I love the pace of everything and the sun keeps me smiling.  My Mom got this recipe from one of her neighbours a few years ago and it's the best lemon pie recipe you will ever taste.  It's also made in the blender so it takes minutes to do.

NANA'S BUCKET PICKLES

We call these bucket pickles because of how we make them but they're also known as bread and butter pickles, sweet pickles or sweet mustard pickles too.  My favourite way to eat these is on a plain saltine cracker with a piece of marble cheese!
